A strong and powerful rider, Lorenzo had consistent and impressive junior campaigns which saw his exploits against the clock rewarded, racking up four wins which included claiming the famous green, white, and red tricolour in the time trial in 2020. The following season saw Lorenzo find his feet in the U23 category, before joining the team’s Development program in 2022 – an opportunity he seized with both hands; taking three wins throughout the year and earning a promotion to the Men’s program for 2023.
“I’m really looking forward to the next season. I already did some races with the WorldTour guys so I know a lot of them, and I think that will help and make the transition easier.”
A former footballer and downhill skier at a young age, Lorenzo was the first in his family to take to the bike after an injury stopped him playing football – his family have since followed in his footsteps by taking up the sport. Despite not playing football anymore, he enjoys hitting the slopes in the winter, when possible, to keep up his fitness.
“I watched the Giro a lot and every May I was like, ‘I don’t want to do my school homework, just want to watch the Giro’, and that’s what made me choose cycling when I stopped football.”
Growing in character, Lorenzo has come out of his shell already in the year since he has been with the team and that’s something he attributes to those in the Development program; “the guys really welcomed me, and we had a lot of fun together.”
It makes sense then that Lorenzo likes to be sociable and would prefer the company of others and a big group rather than being on his own at times – something which could be surprising if you followed his racing in 2022 and the countless times he attacked to try and breakaway. Looking back on that, Lorenzo has learned a few things:
“Usually when I felt my best, I spent too much energy and attacked non-stop, but the wins came on the days where I just felt ‘really good’ and wasn’t stupid and waited for the right moment. So, I need to do that more in the future!”
Looking ahead to the coming years he wants to continue to improve in all areas he can on the bike, learn from the more experienced riders and staff around him, and help the team to as many wins as possible.
In his personal life, in almost stereotypical Italian fashion Lorenzo’s favourite food is pizza and he likes to try and make his own, when possible, which you might find him vibing out to either some rock or rap music while doing so. If not, you can catch him at the local café chilling with his friends or quietly practicing his singing voice, which despite us not hearing any karaoke at Team Camp, he claims he is quite good at. His favourite type of music to sing is “anything Italian as they are nice and easy.”
